Get to Know John Crowley

What positions have you previously held leading up to your current role?

Since I graduated and before my current position: Geneticist, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Industry R&D Associate.

 

What initially sparked your interest in the life science industry?

I grew up on a farm. In school, science and math were always my favorite subjects.

 

Which leader in life science do you most look up to? 

A colleague at Livestock Gentec, Professor Graham Plastow. His career has touched so many innovations in the agri-aood sector.

 

What advice do you have for anyone pursuing a career in life science? 

Diversify your knowledge pools, read outside your immediate area of focus, have a study/work period abroad if possible, and attend those evening guest lectures by the prominent scientists/authors/musicians you may have never heard of.

 

What do you do in your spare time? 

Live music (listening, not playing unfortunately) and sports is what I enjoy most in my spare time. Food, cooking and going out, and I'm lucky enough that work takes me to some interesting places so I will always explore the locales of wherever I end up.

 
What's your favourite Canadian dish? 

Has everyone on the questionnaire already said poutine? Not that it's exclusively Canadian, but lobster from PEI has to be one of my favourite meals ever!

 
What do you most value in your friends?

Loyalty.

 

Which superpower/talent would you most like to have?

I would love be able to play a musical instrument or teleportation ... think Nightcrawler.

 
What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Not sure, ask my mum, she thinks I'm great! 

 
Which living person do you most admire?

Cristiano Ronaldo for his dedication to and skill of his craft in parallel to his charitable works.

 

Who are your heroes in real life? 

My parents. Gave us everything. Couldn't be where I am and live the life I have lived without them.
