Breakfast Keynote - Quality Versus Quantity and the Implication to Food Security

  • Dr. Regina Moench-Pfanner, CEO and Founder ibn360

Food security does not necessarily ensure nutrition security. We have countries that are food secure, yet they also face situations of profound malnutrition such as stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity.

Access to nutrient-dense foods, particularly in low and middle-income countries, is difficult. Such foods are unavailable or too expensive for consumers to afford as many countries still emphasize food quantity and neglect food quality. Economics favours the production of cheap, energy-dense but nutrient-poor foods. All sectors involved in the food and nutrition value chain need to work together to achieve research-driven improvements and disruptive innovations that shift the factors of food production and consumption toward improved nutrition and health outcomes.
