Biography

John is currently the Director of Scientific and Industry Advancement with the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) and also a Research Geneticist with Livestock Gentec at the University of Alberta. Originally from Ireland, John grew up on a mixed dairy and beef operation. He received his PhD in Animal Breeding and Genetics in 2010 from University College Dublin. After working with the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation as a geneticist, he joined Livestock Gentec in 2011. With both CBBC and Gentec, he focusses on the task of genetic improvement and evaluation and is involved in projects developing the use of genomics for breeding and management. Specific applied research revolves around genomic prediction and genome-wide association studies for economically relevant traits (with a focus on feed efficiency and carcass merit) and assessing the potential and best practices for using whole genome sequence information in genetic improvement.
